The Old Police Station

There is a newsagent, Claremont News, on Claremont Street, which is a few minutes walk from the apartment, open from 7 am Monday to Saturday and 8am on Sunday for newspapers, milk, juice etc

For good shopping we have a Tesco Express and a Marks & Spencer food hall in the town centre. Tesco has long opening hours from 7am to 10pm. The main supermarkets are on out of town retail parks but Asda, whilst being slightly out of the main centre, is just a pleasant 15 minute walk along the river from the apartment.

There are lots of lovely food shops in the town. Our favourite deli is Appleyards (also visit their sister business ‘Cook and Carve’ in the market) on High Street. A visit to the town’s award winning pannier market is a must. It is a street away from the apartment and has an amazing range of stalls selling fresh meat, fruit and vegetables, with a fish stall, a bakery stall plus lots of other treats – don’t miss the whole-food stall, run by our daughter Pip and her partner Ben! In addition to buying food for your own cooking there are plenty of cafes for snacks or meals, a gin bar and a stall where you can sample unusual wines, relaxing with nibbles and then buy a bottle to take home. Look out for openings on Saturday evenings, the place to be in Shrewsbury, a great buzz!

We have two bakers in Shrewsbury town centre. The Bakehouse Bakery in Bellstone is two minutes walk, open Wednesday to Saturday, selling extensive range of sourdough bread, croissants and much more. Bread and Loaf is in Castle Gates, near the station. It is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Nationally renowned wine merchant Tanners has its main retail outlet in Shrewsbury town centre in a lovely cellar shop, a great place to visit while you are in Shrewsbury.

If you don’t feel like cooking there is plenty of choice of bars and restaurants.

If shopping is your thing then there is lots of fun to be had in Shrewsbury. Many of the national retail chains have branches in Shrewsbury but the real treat is to visit the many local independent retailers, dotted around the town, many in historic buildings, in lovely quaint little streets and passages, which are called shuts, in Shrewsbury. Wyle Cop is said to be the longest street of independent retailers in the UK. The town centre is not large and it is very easy to spend several hours exploring all the delights on offer.
