Shops and Amentites

Shops and Amentites near
The Old Police Station

There is a newsagent, Claremont News, on Claremont Street, which is a few minutes walk from the apartment, open from 7 am Monday to Saturday and 8am on Sunday for newspapers, milk, juice etc

In the town centre we have a Little Waitrose, a Tesco Metro and a Marks & Spencer food hall. The Waitress and Tesco have long opening hours from 7am to 10pm. The main supermarkets are on out of town retail parks but Asda, whilst being slightly out of the main centre, is just a pleasant 15 minute walk along the river from the apartment.

There are lots of lovely food shops in the town. Our favourite deli is Appleyards (also visit their sister business ‘Cook and Carve’ in the market) on High Street. A visit to the pannier market is a must. It is a street away from the apartment and has an amazing range of stalls selling fresh meat, fruit and vegetables, with a fish stall, a bakery stall plus lots of other treats – don’t miss the Women’s Institute stall on Saturday morning for home baking, preserves and pickles! Look out for openings on Saturday evenings, currently the first Saturday of the month, the place to be in Shrewsbury, a great buzz!

We have two bakers in Shrewsbury town centre. Shrewsbury Bread in Bellstone is two minutes walk and opens at 7.30am selling lovely fresh bread, croissants and much more. Bread and Loaf is in Castle Gates, near the station, it is only open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Nationally renowned wine merchant Tanners has its main retail outlet in Shrewsbury town centre in a lovely cellar shop, a great place to visit while you are in Shrewsbury.

If you don’t feel like cooking there is plenty of choice of bars and restaurants.

If shopping is your thing then there is lots of fun to be had in Shrewsbury. Many of the national retail chains have branches in Shrewsbury but the real treat is to visit the many local independent retailers, dotted around the town, many in historic buildings, in lovely quaint little streets and passages, which are called shuts, in Shrewsbury. Wyle Cop is said to be the longest street of independent retailers in the UK. The town centre is not large and it is very easy to spend several hours exploring all the delights on offer.
